Once there was a boy called David we was a very friendly boy and everyone in the village liked him except this one girl called Anna she was not very fond of David at all because she knew 'the secret'.

Two months earlier David was hard at work just outside his village cutting down trees with his father, that they then sold to the big city. David was never sure why the big city wanted the wood and when he asked his father he was always told "they make tables" but David was never happy with this response, he didn’t trust his dad ever since he woke up on Christmas Eve to see his dad placing the stocking in his room, and he realised that Santa had been one big lie. Even though this was 7 years ago David couldn't forget the embarrassment he felt that he had trusted every word his dad had said.

Well one day, while at work, the truck came as usual at 4.47 to collect the timber for the day but this time instead of the cheerful goodbye and wave to the driver, David decided to investigate. He sneaked onto the truck in between the logs and the cabin and nestled right in so he couldn’t be seen. As the truck drove off with David on board he could just about see his Dad, he was looking around and looked as though he was shouting. He was looking for David.

1 hour and 23 minutes later, the truck engine finally came to a stop and this sudden silence woke David, who had fallen asleep on the journey. He rubbed his eyes and peered between the logs, he could see other lorries unloading logs and they looked as though they were putting them into this big machine. When he saw his chance to escape, he jumped down to the floor from the truck and tip toed behind a large pillar. From his new hiding place he could see the men unloading the logs and putting them into this contraption. The smell of the freshly cut trees was all around him, and his curiosity was getting the better of him, so he tried to work his way to a better position so that he could see what these people were doing. When he got closer he could see the other end of the machine and he couldn’t believe what was coming out of the other side.

it was the logs! Well they certainly looked like the logs. He was very puzzled by this so decided to investigate further. The other side the logs were being taken into a big warehouse. He finally made his way right around to the other side of the machine, dodging between pillars as the men’s eyes were fixed on something else and the other side was a huge fire. From the middle of the machine it appeared the logs were falling into this fire, but how could this be, he had seen with his own eyes that the logs were coming out of the other side. He could not get any closer so he decided to stay put in his hiding place until the coast was clear to investigate.

About 16 minutes later a really loud horn was sounded and all the workers stopped what they were doing and walked towards a little building to the far side. They looked as though they were hypnotized and walked away like zombies. The area was clear within minutes so David decided to make his move. As David approached the smell of burning wood was stronger and stronger but he also noticed another smell in the air. This smell was unfamiliar to David but his nose was telling him to investigate. This smell was much stronger near the machine and as the men had just dropped what they were doing some logs were still near the exit of the machine and this is where the smell was strongest. As he got closer to the logs there was something different about them, he just couldn’t put his finger on it. They look shiny as if made from plastic, "no they can't be" thought David. But then he reached out and touched one and sure enough the log was made of plastic. It was still slightly warm to the touch from where it had been in the machine.

Then suddenly! The horn sounded again and in the distance David could see the men reemerging from the building. He panicked and ran to hiding nearer the warehouse building to see what they were doing in there with these plastic logs and why they were wasting the wood that he and his father had slaved away to cut down. Soon all the men were back to work and started to carry the plastic log that David just touched into the warehouse. As they went past David shuffled his way in making sure nobody noticed him. Inside was a vast space, which was filled with these long tables which they placed the logs on and then there were workers surrounding the logs. From where he was he couldn't quite make out what they were doing but they looked as though they were attaching bits to the log. He could finally make it out they were attaching plastic branches to the logs. "Why on earth would they do this?" he thought. As he strained his eyes he could see at the far end of the warehouse, it looked like a small wood. They were recreating trees out of plastic!

By this time David had had enough and he decided to approach one of the men. He said "Why on earth are you destroying trees to make moulds for new ones?". The man stared blankly at him and said, "The master, want forest". David tried to ask more, but the man just kept repeating the same lines. David realized the men didn’t care about his presence so he approached more and questioned them, the same response every time. He went outside to the big machine and asked them, getting the same response. "WHO IS THE MASTER!" he shouted. It fell silent for a few seconds and then...

The horn bleared out, the sound was deafening. Then the workers all dropped their tools and started to walk towards the small building again. Now curious David joined them, and walked in the same zombie fashion as to blend in. Inside the building were lines of cushions upon which the men knelt and bowed their heads. David knelt at one of these cushion and bowed too. In front of them was a blue curtain, by now David had to know who was behind all this. "YOU THERE, BOW TO ME!" a voice boomed, but David dare not look up. Next he heard footsteps and a man being carried off screaming. David looked around and noticed the cushions where all occupied and it must have been his fault that the man was taken away, he wondered what would happen to him. Then the screaming came to a sudden stop after a loud thud. David gulped, had he just been responsible for a mans death? Then he heard the sound of the curtains opening and he looked up...

"You boy, shall not look at the master!". Oh no David had been caught. He decided to stand up against this voice that was coming from between the opening curtains behind thick fog. "I am not like the others, I have a voice and I am going to speak out" said David, "what are you doing here?" he continued. "Making a forest" replied the voice. "No you are destroying a forest and making plastic copies, why would you do this?" screamed David. "Because my boy..." then there was a pause "I can, ha ha ha ha ha" laughed the voice. But then something odd happened, the fog started to clear and all that was left was a geeky teenager sat at a desk with a voice changer held to his mouth. "Oh!" exclaimed the teen as he tried to hide himself, "the master must go now! SHUT THE CURTAINS! SHUT THE CURTAINS!!!". But the curtains did not shut and David walked up to the teen. "Why have you done this?" David asked. "Because... I am allergic to trees, and I wanted to enjoy the forest like others" said the teen. "So you would quite happily destroy thousands of trees just to make yourself happy?" asked David, "and what about all these people?". "They are workers, they are hypnotized to do as I say, their families think they are dead".

"Whaaa?" exclaimed David, "I'm going to reveal you!" he shouted as he ran for the door. "STOP HIM!" shouted the teen and two men stood in his way and grabbed him. "Your not going anywhere, if you promise to keep this place a secret, you can live here with me and have all the things you desire" said the teenager. David thought about his life at home, although he was liked, he never really liked his life, he wanted to work in the big city but his dad insisted he cut wood like he did and he had no friends of his age. He pondered for a while and then said.... "Ok then, I promise to keep it a secret".

Then just outside the door you see an eye. "Who's there?" shouts the teen. Then when the doors were swung open by two men, all they saw was a girl rushing off into the distance and David noticed something on the floor. It was a bracelet and it had a name on it.

'Anna'
